A trip to the symbol of democracy

Last year, I made a trip to Neustadt in Rhineland-Palatinate. The town is closely associated with Hambach Castle, a symbol of German democracy.

Kloster Neustadt

I stayed at Kloster Neustadt, a monastery of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Downtown Neustadt

Outer white, brown inside?

German conspiracy theorists, all dressed in white, had previously flocked the streets of Neustadt and claimed to be the only true heirs of democracy.

COVID-19: bitter rows

In the early 2020s, there were bitter rows about COVID-19 vaccination in Germany. While some recklessly accused the press of lying (Lügenpresse), others maintained that there was only one truth, and the press had to teach it. Freedom of the Press was challenged from two sides, not only from one, as the exhibition at Hambach Castle suggests.

Final impression

Democracy is not all over in Germany, but there’s change on the horizon.
